Northern Flicker

A lot of times, my dogs are a pain in the butt to walk. One of them pulls in one direction while the other one goes the opposite way. One wants to greet every stranger while the other is terrified of anything that walks on two legs ("Four legs good, two legs bad"). They are incredibly good at finding random chicken bones (seriously people, find a trash can), and they are obsessed with chasing squirrels. In fact, when Farrah stopped abruptly during our walk on Sunday to point at the base of a tree, I figured it was her noticing a squirrel waving a half-eaten chicken wing at her. To my surprise, when I looked back I saw this cool looking woodpecker just hanging out. I watched it for a while before continuing on our walk.

After Farrah finally found the perfect spot to do her business, we walked back by the tree and to my surprise the bird was still there. I decided to hustle back home to see if I couldn't return quickly with my camera and snap a few photos. Jen and James joined me at Garfield Park as I looked for the bird. It wasn't where I left it, but I found it sitting in a hollow part of a different tree a few minutes later. I thought it might have an injured wing because it spent an awful lot of time hanging out on the ground and let me get some nice close ups. However, according to the internet, the Northern Flicker mainly eats beetles and ants on the ground. After posing for a few pics, it did indeed fly away without problems. After that, we took a few portraits of James in our favorite park. A new pic of him should be up soon (I hope!).

Haircut #3

James was born with a lot of hair, and it has not stopped growing since! A lot of people told us to prepare for when it would fall out, but this never happened. This is actually his 3rd haircut since he was born less than 5 months ago! The first one was to get rid of the mullet. The second one was a trim of the sides. Finally, we decided to give him a proper cut all over because it was way too long. I love the expressions on his face from this experience. See the rest here on flickr. In this one, he looks very concerned, but he was great the whole time.

It's been a while since my last post. I never got around to posting any pictures from my summer trip to Berlin, so I figured today is a great day to do it. Today is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. 1989 does not feel like 20 years ago! This is a picture of the East Side Gallery. It's a 1.3 km section of the old wall that has been painted by artists from around the world. Right now, it is undergoing restoration, so there are sections that are obstructed by fences and scaffolding. Jen and I were walking back from having lunch in Eastern Market when I spotted this monarch butterfly. This site helped me figure out that this one is a male because of the spots on the hind wings and the thinner webbing. This makes me wish I had a nice macro lens, but the trusty nifty fifty will have to do for now!

Baby James Min-Hyuk was born at 0047 on September 12. He was almost 2 weeks past his due date, and it showed! He weighed in at 8 pounds 14 ounces and was 22 1/4 inches long (tall?). The doctors and nurses at Sibley were wonderful, and we couldn't have done it without you. I highly recommend them if you are looking for a hospital. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes, visits, gifts, and food! I hope you all get a chance to meet him in person soon.

I'm sure Jen is ecstatic now that I have someone else at home to take pictures of. :)

This is one of my favorite things in James' room. Some of my fondest memories of my childhood was watching Skins games with my dad. I can't wait to do that with my son!

He was due on September 1, but he is taking his sweet time. I hope we get to meet him this holiday weekend!

It was beautiful outside this weekend, so we decided to go somewhere that we could enjoy the weather. Jen thought it would be a good idea to check out the Maryland Renaissance Festival. I had never been before, and I didn't know what to expect. It was actually pretty fun, and the food and beer was tasty. You will definitely see a lot of interesting characters (both people working there and your fellow visitors!). Afterward, we drove over to downtown Annapolis for some ice cream and a stroll along the water.

It's a Duck duck

Digital Photography School has a good article by Joe Decker on wildlife photography. Basically, the tips are:

1. Take lots of photos
2. Try and focus on the eyes
3. Take time to understand your subject
4. Compose your subject so it has room to look into the frame.

I definitely try and use all these tips when shooting wildlife. The full article is definitely worth a read.

Jen recently had lunch with her sister and her kids, and she took them to a duck pond. I asked her what kind of ducks they had there. Her response was, "I don't know, Duck ducks." Of course I was being obnoxious because the only ducks I know by name are Mallards. I'm pretty sure that these are the types of ducks they saw since they seem to be all over the DC area.

My nephew had his first ever soccer match this weekend. You couldn't ask for a nicer Sunday afternoon. Jen is a super-aunt because she skipped the Syracuse NCAA tournament game to watch. Jen and I hiked Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoah this weekend. The weather was perfect! There are some tricky spots along the rock scramble, but it is definitely worth it. This is Jen resting at the top after we ate our turkey sandwiches. Be careful if you use the google map directions linked from the hikingupward.com page. We found out the hard way that Trails End Lane is actually a private drive that is blocked. We then spent a good 30-45 minutes driving on gravel roads looking for the parking lot. Coming from the DC area, instead of turning onto Rolling Road, go straight for about 5 miles and you will see signs for Old Rag.

Quote of the day: "That's what I do, dwell!" after Jen had asked me not to dwell on the fact that we got lost.

Pentagon Memorial

I saw the dedication ceremony of the Pentagon Memorial on 9/11/2008 on television while I was in AZ last week, and I visited it in person a few nights ago. The concept is pretty simple, but there are a lot of small touches that add up to a nice memorial. There is a single bench for each person that died in the attack. Each row of benches represents the birth year of the victims. The benches are arranged so visitors face the Pentagon to read the names of victims that were in the building, and visitors face the sky when reading the names of victims that were in the plane. There are 184 benches total. Seeing all 184 benches lit up at night really makes you think about the individuals that were lost.

Veronica has a wonderful account of her experience that day in 2001. Personally, I was in my car on the way to class that morning when I first heard the news. I remember most people being very scared, and there were rumors of other buildings being hit like the State Department building. I don't think I will forget how quiet the rest of the day felt except for the sound of occasional fighter jets flying overhead. I encourage everyone to visit the memorial if they are anywhere near Washington, DC. Here are some pictures that I took over the weekend:

Had to dig into the archives to get a new post up. I've been out of town on travel, so I haven't had the chance to take any new pics. Someone asked if they could use this image in their publication. It had to do with cleaning the Anacostia watershed. I didn't think that this was a particularly strong picture, but it's a nice compliment.

We took a short trip to the zoo this weekend to see the California sea lions get trained and fed. One of the nice perks about living in the city is that you don't feel like you have to take an entire day to tour the museums and parks. You see something that looks fun, and you go. The sea lions get fed daily at 11:30. Go an hour earlier and watch the otters get fed, too.

While we are on the subject of transportation, this is how I got home from work on Friday. I actually wasn't supposed to go over this bridge, so I had to backtrack just a bit. WABA has links to a bunch of maps that helped me get from Beltsville to Capitol Hill. I used the one on this page for the Beltsville/College Park area. Be sure to print it out in color since the trails are color coded. It's a fun way to get around, and it doesn't take any gas!

Doggie Paddle

This is Farrah's first swim! Michael Phelps has nothing on my dog. Ok, that's a lie since she lasted about 3.5 seconds in the water before scrambling back to shore. We took the dogs to Quiet Waters near Annapolis, MD over the weekend where they have a dog beach as well as a regular dog park. I will post more pics from this trip tomorrow.

Jen and I went to watch Superman on the Mall last night. It was the last movie for HBO's Screen on the Green. We got there around 7:30. As you can see, it was already packed! Next year, we'll have to get there a little earlier. Another tip for those of you who might go next year: sit far away from the truck with the projector. The generator is loud and can drown out the sound.

It wasn't too bad though because Jen is a planner extraordinaire. She bought some cheap beach chairs and prepared a nice picnic. She also knows that I am unable to watch a movie without popcorn (it's half the fun!). A couple friends joined us right when the movie started.

Oh, and I forgot how cheesy the interactions between Superman and Lois Lane are.

I've been slacking with the posts lately due do my trips to San Francisco, Yosemite, and Deep Creek Lake. Next week should be much better. SF was good, but I wish I had less work and more play. Yosemite was amazing. I will definitely be back. Check out Tim's description of our trip. He has a much better memory than me. They all got to do a lot more touring since I was at work during the day. All of the food listed was good, but Yang Sink was a bit overpriced. I now crave dungeness crab almost daily.

The Half Dome hike is intense, but worth it. Too bad I left my camera batteries at the cabin! D'oh! Check out the pics on Tim's site though. Here are some pics from when I did have my batteries:

Chris, Tim, and John in the pool below Yosemite Falls. I was the first one to brave the cold waters! It was freezing cold even in July, but it was worth it to stand under the falls.

3 Billy Goats

A few weeks ago, we were out and someone brought up the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls. Well, I had never been there, so timfred suggested we do a Saturday morning hike. In typical fashion, there was little planning besides a Friday night call where we agreed to meet at 8 am off of MacArthur Blvd past Falls Road.

The next morning, I printed off two sets of directions to the "Billy Goat Trail" and we were off! On our way there, we passed several dozen cyclists on Clara Barton Parkway and MacArthur Blvd. Seems to be a very popular place to ride on the weekend. There are lots of giant hills though. You have been warned!

We pull into an entrance by the Old Anglers Inn. Some confusion follows...I call timfred to verify the meeting point...jokingly blame Jen for the miscommunication...get a physical beating from Jen...finally end up meeting by the visitor's center. By the way, I recommend parking by the Old Anglers Inn if you get there early enough (around 8 am on Saturday). It's close enough to the trail head and it's free! Try this link for a good description and driving directions.

Anyway, a good time was had by all. Section A of the trail has a lot of rock scrambles and great views of the river. Section B is much more flat. Check out some of the highlights:

I visited Paint Branch Stream Park on Sunday morning. I grew up very close to here, but I haven't been there in at least 10 years. The trees look much bigger, but everything else was the same. This guy stayed still for quite a while while I took many pictures of it. Luckily for you, you only have to see one.

I took a trip to the National Zoo on Sunday. It was late and there was a lot of construction for the new Elephant Trail, so not many animals were out. The cheetahs were out and active though, and I got a few shots of them.

I was driving home from the zoo on Sunday night right before the storm started. The sun was setting at the same time, so I had some pretty dramatic lighting. There were tons of ducks in the Capitol Reflecting Pool. This family was trying to get away from me. :)

There are glass panes in front of the front rows of the upper levels. I caught the reflections of some Rangers fans and thought it made for a cool effect. This game went 14 innings, but we left after the 12th. Too bad they canceled the after-game fireworks show in consideration of the neighbors. We're the neighbors! :)

Lights, Camera, Action!

Today I decided to go to Gravelly Point to take pictures of airplanes taking off from National Airport. The plane pics ended up being "eh", but I did manage to get some interesting
moving light images. For you cyclists out there, this is right on the Mount Vernon Trail (one of our favorites).

While I was waiting for a plane to pass overhead, I noticed a biker riding on the trail with different colored lights on his spokes. I used a 3 second shutter speed and got this image.

Here I am playing with slow shutter speeds again while a plane takes off over my head. The bright object is the moon. There is some camera shake since I did not use a tripod.

As I was leaving, I decided to stick with the slow shutter speed theme and take a few pics of the traffic on the GW Parkway. Here I could brace against the post of a street sign. I think a tripod will be my next purchase. Any good recommendations? I'm not trying to break the bank.

This is a shot of the ground in front of the Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab Trail at the Grand Canyon. This trail is accessible from the North Rim. If this is your destination on a day hike, make sure you continue through the tunnel a bit for some amazing views.

Now everyone has a cell phone, but how did people call for emergency help before? In a lot of cities, there were fire and police call boxes on the street. In D.C., they are all disconnected. I think some of them in Dupont Circle have been made into public art projects. This one is on the corner of South Carolina Ave and 4th St SE right next to Marion Park.

Jen registered me for a photo safari as a gift. It was steaming hot yesterday, but it was worth it. You get some good tips on photography in general as well as some specific to architecture and landmarks. I had a great time! Here are a few pics from the half day field trip:

Indoor Trees

Repost...don't know what happened to the last one. Jen noticed these huge trees in the middle of a giant glass atrium. This is the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building. I couldn't find out much about it other than the fact that it is under the jurisdiction of the Architect of the Capitol.

Here are some of the animals we saw in Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. I don't know how the hiking in front of us saw the big horn sheep! The squirrels were obviously fed by humans as they would come right up to people and basically hold out two paws. The California condor sighting was great! We also saw turkeys, deer, elk(?), and lots of lizards. No rattlesnakes though!

Just got back from our trip to the Grand Canyon. It is really impressive! This is the Colorado River overlooking the Navajo Bridge. The bridge is very close to the "official" start of the Grand Canyon.
